Yet Another Hatch Pulldown Question
Yet Another Hatch Pulldown Question
Okay, so the new 'Bird (91) had the usual nonfunctioning rear hatch pulldown thing going.
Replaced the broken housing and threw in a new nut. Worked perfectly with a click and stop at the end.
Once.
Now I get a click-click sound from the relay and the motor buzzes a bit, but otherwise nothing.
Am I looking at a dead relay or a dead motor here?

MOst likely not a bad relay. It may be that the motor stalled out before tripping the reversing switch. If so it is simple to remedy. Unlatch the pull-down motor and raise the hatch. Reach in and press on the striker-sensing switch. The switch is black plastic with four wires coming out if it. It is attached just in front of the latch with a single hex-head screw. You'll see a small paddle which you need to press and hold down. The pull-down motor should travel down the reminder of the down cycle, then trip the reversing switch shutting off the cycle. Release the switch and it will power all the way back up. Once you've done this the unit has been re-set. You should adjust the pull-down unit a bit higher so it will complete the entire down cycle on its own. Undo the 3 13mm mount screws and raise it up a little.

Yes. I've recently had a few problems with gear nuts. They sometimes have a tight inside threads right near the end of the down cycle. Disassemble and completely clean any grease from the gear nut and threads of the lift rod. Screw the gear nut onto the lift rod and check if it has any tight spots. If so, the inside threads can be re-sized by heating the threads of the lift rod with a propane torch or burner of a stove. Then thread the heated lift rod onto the gear nut to re-size the inside threads. Of course be wearing protective gloves while doing this so you don't get burned. While you're at it also put +/- 12v to the exposed terminals on the motor where the reversing switch attaches to make sure it is still ok.
