Charging System Problems
I am having difficulty getting my alternator to charge my battery. I read in the forums that if my fan switch was not working poroperly that it would cause the alternator to be inactive. I have since rewired the switch and verified that it is working properly. I have done some tests and here are the results:
With the ignition in the On position, if I test the voltage on the large red wire on the alternator post I get no voltage. If I apply 12v to that wire from the battery my starter solenoid is activated. My car starts so the wire must be good from the battery to the starter.
With the ignition in the On position, if I test voltage on the two-wire pack on the alternator, both the red and the brown wire output about 11.80v. At this time if I apply 12v to the large post on the alternator via a bypass cable on the positive post from the battery, I hear a faint whine in the alternator. Do you suppose this is the regulator being activated, or is this a bad sign?
Can I replace this alternator with a one-wire Powermaster? I would prefer to get this one working but if it gets too time consuming I would rather get a one-wire and get on the road than rewire anything else.
If I bypass the starter and wire a 6ga wire directly from the battery to the main post on the alternator it would just drain the battery right? If anyone has some insight into my problem, your help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Charging System Problems
I am just checking to see if this post is active. I can't find it anywhere in the forums....weird. Is there an update time on this new search routine?
... Answers own question...yup delay in posting.

Re: Charging System Problems
that whine might be the regulator
but who knows
bad diode(s) maybe... that would make irregular charges and such.
bypassing the starter...how would you start the car then?
ur post is on the forum list, just far down on the electronic one
sry i dont know more bout it
