Fan relays! Why do I keep toasting them???

I fried ANOTHER fan relay today. This is the first relay I have blown since I re-did my fan system.

- New GM fan motor
- New relay connector soldered in from JY Camaro
- Head fan switch bypassed in favor of EBL fan control function
- Fan draws 30-35 amps inrush and levels off at 11.5 amps at full speed.
- Alternator voltage is a steady 14.2.
- My RPMs take a noticeable dip accompanied by all the lights dimming when the fan turns on. Is this normal?

Whats the deal?

seems to be a quite common problem. i just skipped all that and wired my fan to a switch and set it up just behind my power window switch. works really good. without the relay in play the fan will only take what i needs for energy. if you do this i warn you, NO ELeCTRICAL TAPE. make sure to securly fasten all wires together. and tap off any other open end'd wires. also dont forget to turn it off when you shut off your car.

I've run into problems with fuel pump relays for my Jimmy.I know it's a completly different vehicle but very similar relay. It came down to where it's made.Auto Zone/Advance-Parts America-O'Reillys sell the relays that are made in Taiwan/China and these have had problems.Check to where the relay is made.
And you do need the relay in the circuit as it takes the full load off the switch.Makes sure you have good clean grounds and wire connections. The RPM drop is the alternator being loaded on fan startup. When i switch to the factory dual fans on my '83 I upgraded from the 80 amp alternator to a 108 amp for a '86.
