What's that "THING" on the wire between ALT. and BATT.?

Alright guys, been reading a lot about wiring, upgrading, and "THE BIG 3". Did a search and there's countless threads, and I couldn't find an answer to my question.

Simple enough: On the the wire that goes between the battery and alternator, about 6" from the positive terminal on the battery, there's a little black cylindrical thing with an orange and a black smaller gauge wire coming off of it. What IS THAT????

....and how do I wire it into my "upgraded" wiring plan? It's the only part that's got me stumped.

Thanks guys.

Oh, by the way, it's an 89 Iroc with the L98.

it is the fuse link, well the wire is, the black cylinder thing where is the connector is to join the fuse link to the alt wire.
you want to keep the fuse links.
you can get replacement links from most any parts house.
