You can get a pretty nice craftsman for about 30 bucks. I have one and it works awesome. Even has a port to hook up a thermometer to check temp.s and what not.

Without knowing what features you need sky is the limit. You can get a pocket meter from Radio Shack for around $10 or you can get a really nice meter with all the bells and whistles for closer to $300 or more. I have an Amprobe and I like it, cost around $100.

Little yellow digital job from Harbor Freight - costs $3, has a lighted display, and does everything I ever needed for the last 3 years! (I'm a tight-a$$)

You get what you pay for in a meter, for everyday use I would definitely go for a Fluke. Flukes are good quality and very accurate but expensive compared to a lot of other brands. For occasional use like the average backyard mechanic, a Craftsman or similar will be just fine. Get one that at least measures AC/DC volts, and resistance.

Re: can anyone reccomend a good multimeter?
Fluke is hands down one of the best out there. thats what i have been using in the past and what i had in my auto tech classes. right know i got a HP multimeter my dad "aquired from work" some years back and that one has been by far the best i have ever used. personally, if you are going to be using it often, then go out and get a good one. the cheap-o's do a good job but are only so accurate and in my experiance only last so long. My advice is look at how often you use it, how long you want it, and what specific features you need it for.

so i need volts and ohms at least. leaning towards the craftsman. flke sounds good but oo much cash for my usage. are there any other features i'd wish i had for automotive usage?
