Bad relay connector

Hi everyone, well i have been having problems with the cooling fan relay in my 86 firebird. I replaced the relay and still the same problem, fan will not come on unless i tap those wires. When the ignition is on, with the aldl conenctor jumped, the fan wont turn on, but i hear buzzing and clicking noises coming from the middle of the engine. As i looked closely at the relay connector, the wires have stretched out pretty far, and its probably not connected to the contacts, resulting in the failure of the relay. The only way the fan will turn on is if the green wire touches the red one, but then i hear a clicking sound in the relay. Obviously I need a new connector. Any suggestions on where to get one? Ive checked on ebay and some other auto parts sites but no luck. Would i have to cut the wires/connector and splice in new ones? or somehow remove the connector and pop in a new one? Thanks in advance.

btw, heres a picture

Re: Bad relay connector

does your connector look like either on of these?
If so, they are made by Dorman Products, under their Conduct-Tite line of products. They should me available at most parts store that cater to repair shops (not big discount chains) The part number is the same as the jpg file name for each pic.
Let me know how it goes.

Re: Bad relay connector

Update! I went to my local auto parts store and I ordered the first connector u showed me. Apparently thats the correct one!! Im going to pick it up today and install it, if the weather holds up. Thanks so much. btw, should i just cut the old one off and splice in the new wires with a soldering iron? Or should i just twist them together and wrap it with tape? Thanks

Re: Bad relay connector

Soldering would be the preferred way in this case. You don't want an unreliable twisted connection in your car wiring.

Actually, if the connector comes with new terminals as well, there is no doubt what to do: just crimp them on the wires.

Re: Bad relay connector

Update! I wired in the new connector but the results were the same. When i had the adld connector jumped, and turned the igniton on, the fan didnt turn on. I just heard a buzzing sound come from somewhere around the engine. Is there a easy, direct way to test the fan? Maybe the motor just died.... thanks

Re: Bad relay connector

try tapping on the motor with the aldl jumped so the fan has power going to it at all times, if that doesnt work, check the fan at the connector for power, if there is no power, start tracing wires and checking for power at the same time.

Re: Bad relay connector

What do you mean by tapping on the motor? Wasnt there a way to turn on the fan by connecting 2 of those wires that go to the relay?
