replace gauge lights, questions regarding gauge cluster removal
Hey guys,
1987 IROC
I understand the speedo cable has to be removed in order to remove the gauge cluster. Its not easy to get to the release button. I will have to get a screwdriver up there to hit the button. The question is, it seems like it will be much harder to get the speedo cable back on, since I can't get my hand up there. Is this true?
Is the speedo cable just hanging there, requireing my hand to get it reattached?
Or is it connected to a bracket so I just have to push the cluster towards the front of the car and everything will clip in?
Thanks
John

When i was under the dash, I had a heck of a time getting my hand behind the dash, my speedo cable had vitually no play in it. I could only pull out the cluster maybe 1/4 inch with the cable attached. If I lower the steering column via the two bolts, will it be easier for me to get my hand back there?

Ok thanks for the help. This job doesn't look like fun. I don't think my back will like it.

I ended up releasing the speedo cable with a long screwdriver, not a big deal. Suprisingly, I was able to get the cable reconnected very easily. I couldn't get my hand up there, but I just pushed in on with a long screwdriver.
JamesC thanks for the help.
