Dimmer switch/Linkage help.

My dimmer switch wont work in my 91 Firebird, im not sure what the problem is I know its not the switch its self because I can press it by hand and it works fine but when I use the switch it dosent work, I took that little plastic piece of the steering column so I could see what was going on with the switch also took the bottom dash cover off. the black plastic actuator is still there I took it out and compared it to another one and they look the same Whenever I try to use the switch nothing happens I can see the rod
linkage giving in (bending) and then moving slightly.

Some help on this please.

Re: Dimmer switch/Linkage help.

It could be that the linkage is simply out of adjustment with the switch.
Use this tech article to make sure it's adjusted properly. http://www.austinthirdgen.org/module...howpage&pid=18

Re: Dimmer switch/Linkage help.

Thanks, I adjusted it but it still dosent work I think the rod may be weak because when I ever I hit the switch the rod bends then pushes the switch in a little bit. I have wrecked car with a good rod in it, does anybody know how to get the rods out?

Re: Dimmer switch/Linkage help.

It sounds like the rod came out of the little socket it sits in at the turn signal lever end. While rebuilding my column it took 3 tries to figure it all out.
It will be easier to fix if it is not a tilt column. The only way I know of getting it back in alignment is to remove the steering wheel and then the lock plate to see where the rod is going in order to line it up. NOT FUN AT ALL! The rod has a slight offset to it, that is why it won't just fall out.
Let me know if it is tilt or not and I can post a diagram.

Re: Dimmer switch/Linkage help.

Its a tilt wheel, the rod sits in a socket? I know the rod goes into a socket at the switch but I have the black piece that pushes on the rod when ever I pull the dimmer switch.
