Hey guys,

A friend of mine has just bought an 88 low mileage GTA, lovely car however the dash has gone off......well, not entirely. He thought the whole thing had gone off but if you catch it in the right light the whole dash is actually working perfectly.

However, there is no backlight. As if the dimmer is turned all the way down, and then some ! he said hes taken the dimmer module out and tested it and it is changing the voltage as it goes up and down, but it doesnt change the brightness of the dash itself ?

So basically he cant see any of his readouts at all, and wont even consider driving the car once it gets dark

Here's a little info on the lighting.this is from the 86 Firebird Service Manual,should be the same.

 

So it's halogen bulbs that illuminate the digital displays. Didn't know that ! Thanks man

 

Be sure to have him check the INST Fuse in the fuse-box.

There is a wiring diagram for the Digital Dash DIM circuit in this thread.

P.S. I never tested my alternate wiring method,...some-day I will and I will post the results when I do !!

 

Thanks guys. hopefully its just the bulbs behind the dash that need replaced then
