Big problems, need help fast
Ok, here's the issue. After swapping in a new carbed 350 for the old carbed 305 in my 85 T/A, I'm having wiring issues. First, after all the basic wiring has been hooked back up, there's no power to most things. I get a buzzing left turn signal relay, and the brake idiot light lights up when I turn the key to start. I get no action to the starter at all through the key, and if I use a jumper wire to try and start it, the bendix just clicks forward like it's hitting the flexplate. I still need to try and shim the starter out, but more importantly, the ground wires will get super hot and start to smoke if I try and jump the starter. So, any ideas on where I should start with this? The grounds are solid, so I guess there's a short somewhere?

It sounds to me like you hooked something up wrong. The wiring from a carbed 305 to a Carbed 350 should be nearly identical. I'd get your schematic and make sure everything is where it's supposed to be. The only difference might be if you are going CC carb or non-CC carb.

Hmm, hot ground cables when jumping the starter? Make sure that the wire that goes from the second big post on the solenoid into the starter is not touching the starter housing or anything grounded. Does the big positive starter cable get hot too?

well if the solenoid kicks the bendix out then the wiring is all good,
make sure the starter motor is good
as already said the wiring will be virtually identical
nothing would need to be changed as far as alternator and starter go
is any of that wiring hacked anywhere in the car that you know of ?
the starter shoud not need a shim, if it does then something is very wrong
what bolt pattern nose cone do you have and what diameter plate do you have ?
get a 1/8" drill bit and stic it inbetween the very outside edge of the plate and the shaft the bendix drive gear rides on
it should fit snug
if not then you have the wrong nose cone and plate combo
good luck

Re: Big problems, need help fast
Well, I spent a little time last night making some good, thick, well made ground cables, and that did the trick. Now I have a different problem. When I try and start the car, it typically backfires like hell through the carb. I've tried making sure the crank is a tdc on the compression stroke and lining up the distributor accordingly, but nothing changes. I've realigned the dist, flipped it around in case it was 180* off, all the usual stuff, and it still won't fire up. I have fuel, and spark (obviously), but now I'm all confused.
