Re: CB

wilson magnet mounts would be 2 feet tall mounted on the hatch, but any reason you'd want one in your camaro? I have one on my tow rig to keep in the loop for traffic issues, but would never mount one on the camaro.

Re: CB

JC Whitney had a contol box that made your radio antenna double as a cb antenna.

You need a cb in your car to keep up on where the bears are hiding especially if you cant have a radar detector.

Re: CB

That and me and a few of my freinds go on long car trips alot.... We have property up north and its about a 4 hour drive to it... And we take 3 vechiles... and its alot cheaper then paying the roaming charges on a cell phone... And then also my family all lives near our property and my buddy has a cb in his truck and i use that to talk with them over the cb and such... So im thinking about getting one in my car... that way on the trips instead of calling every so often to chit chat just grab the CB...If i had a 2nd gen id liek it just because i really enjoy smokey and the bandit... and havign a cb in that would top it off. but i like my 3rd gen better then the 2nd.

Re: CB

I had one on my 92 RS when I was a volunteer firefighter. Came in handy, en route to calls, especially when I went POV (Personal Owned Vehicle) rather than going by the station, and hopping a truck. It was easier/better to carry my turnouts in my car, and get to a scene quicker, than going to the station, when others already had trucks en route.

I had a 6' whip though. Obviously not very stylish, but very functional.

It also provides entertainment on a boring night in a dry county(or if you just can't buy booze): fox hunting.

Haven't done it in years, but it was a good time.

Re: CB

Those antennas that work as a cb and am/fm or not very good for either.
I would recomend a handheld radio that plugs into your lighter socket with a rubber duck antenna for what your wanting to do that way you don't have to advertise you have a cb in your car and it doesn't spoil the looks.
But if your serious about cb'ing then a wilson or k40 antenna in around 4' lenght or whip antenna will get out better and recieve better too.

Re: CB

I was looking on the web.. Cant remeber the site... ill have to look again but they has soem antennas that were only 2 feet long.. and some that were 3'... Now im not fully knowing how it works and what not. But is it the bigger the antenna the better reception and aslo the longer range?. or is range in the CB its self?. If its in the antenna how far would a 2 foot get me?

bigger is better in this case and a 2'er isn't going to get you far at all. With a Wilson 1000 and Cobra 25 Classic, my truck is lucky to see 10 miles here in flat Florida. Unfortunately the way a radio wave works, you need a long antenna and mounting in the middle of the roof (acting as a ground plane) sends/recieves the best.

How far are you looking to reach? If it's less than a mile, follow what Built said.

BTW: The radio in my truck has a lighter jack and magnet mount Wilson, when I need to put supplies on the roof, the antenna is easily removed and when needed, the radio comes out easily as well.

Re: CB

I was hoping for maybe 5 ish. It would be nice to get 10 or more.. But i dont think that will fly in my camaro... Maybe if i buy another truck or a SUV id get a bigger antenna but... not in the camaro. I might just not do it i geuss.

Re: CB

The range is more in the antenna than in the CB. If you find data on antennas, look for "Gain". +3 dB doubles the output power of your CB relative to a 0 dB, and quadruples it relative to a -3 dB antenna.. A coil somewhere on the whip allows it to be shorter and still function adequately (but is still a compromize). Rubber duck antennas are all coil inside. Don't know the actual ranges.

Or an amplifier could be used. A short antenna with 300watts might do it, but then you are talking about a lot more money. Most places only allow 5watts max, but if it's not enforced where you live, you might want to look into it.

I suggest you go and talk to a shop that sells radios, they can piont you in the right direction. Not to mention, you will need a pro to properly tune your anntena to maximize your range.

Re: CB

You are better off going to a place that sells HAM equipment (for a base station or "home CB"), they seem to know more.

Re: CB

LIL WILL from wilson, a mag mount 3 foot whip TALKS LIKE A BIGGUN and its only $30-$40, plus its easy to remove, put a piece of non slip stuff between it and the car to avoid any chace of scratches even though the mag is coated. that am/fm converter is a good way to fry a good CB, i personally love my CB i got a Galaxy with a huge final and a foot warmer (amp) kickin it. but im also a truck driver, most of my bud have them and they are fun to talk to your friends you may be travelin with..............plus you can play CB tag in spair time, also they go good in a 3rd get resto because CBs were the rage in the 80's, so it can looks with them times
