distributor problem... help!

my distributor under the cap, is all totally rusted. it's bad. don't ask me how but i need a new distributor (not just cap and rotor, the entire setup underneath the distributor).

could anyone point me into a direction to which part i should get? i've been on summit but there are too many different ones and i'm not an expert.

i have a 1991 305. tuned port injection. LB9. firebird trans am yadda yadda.

i dont need anything super, just the best bang for my buck. i'm on a budget but dont want to skimp on quality.

part number would be awesome

I believe that none of the ones on summit are a direct replacement, I think they all require some kind of modification. Your local Checker should have a direct replacement in stock for $180.

RockAuto has the cheapest price on a new Dorman Distributor at $150. Only brands I really see are Dorman and Cardone that are certified direct replacements.

If you are interested in a used (but good) distributor, I can ask my buddy if it's still available. From a 90+ TPI system.

Let me know.

Re: distributor problem... help!

i am thinking that a stock good used one wil be the best thing for him yeah

how rusted is it ?

i mean is it just a couple metal parts rusted, or are parts frozen stuck from the rust, or ?

need to find the cause of that moisture issue, is there water from the hood somehow making it onto the cap during rain or during washing the car ??

may have to find a way to seal the cap hmmm

got pics of the rust, etc ?

good luck

Re: distributor problem... help!

i'd hate to go with anything used because i've had some bad experiences with used parts before and as my own rule of thumb, if i can avoid it i will. i'll look at rockauto for a dorman replacement

i'll try to get some pictures after the holiday weekend. i took the cap off and the metal nub sticking up is flaking with rust and everything down in there was badly rusted (clearly NOT doing any good at conductivity), i tried to dig deeper but i kept flaking rust down into there and didn't want to screw anything up even more with rust flakes. i'm gonna have to pull the whole assembly and see what i need to replace

i dont know how moisture got down there. i only got the car in january and never had any problem with rainy starts so i think it happened long ago.

God. This rings a bell. I coulda sworn there was something around the distributor that could fail and get coolant in the oil, which might be the cause of your problem. It seems so familiar.... I wish the search was up. I could probably find it if it's not a figment of my imagination.
