where can I move knock sensor to?
where can I move knock sensor to?
I posted in TPI but didn't get any responses. Anyone have any suggestions where to move the knock sensor to on a flat tappet block w/ '92 TPI so that I can change to center dump block hugger headers?
thanks

Jeff,
After talking to Howell Industries in Marine City, Michigan about the same thing, they said it could be moved to the frame or the motor mount. This is where they tell the hot rodders to move it when using block hugging headers. They told me, anyplace is OK as long as it has a good ground.
Good Luck, Mike

Yes, but then it wouldnt work.
It needs a solid acoustic coupling to the motor to detect knock. it also must be away from the valvetrain as much as possible.

Tap into a coolant vein perhaps. Somewhere away from the valvetrain. Liquids are great transporters of sound, so perhaps mounted in the radiator and exposed to the coolant. That would be better than the frame at least.
EDIT: Maybe in a pressurized oil passage, cause I'm sure that would carry the sound. You may have more valvetrain noise there, though.

I figured I would keep it low anyway. One guy said drill and tap the fuel pump block off plate but I wasn't sure if that would transmit the harmonics or how sensitive the sensor is. Another guy said he has done a few and just put a couple 45 degree fittings in stock position to turn it away from the exhaust. Once again I wasn't sure if the brass would transmit the harmonics but it is still in the water jacket. I may try that and see what happens. I just don't want to be chasing my tail if I don't have to. thanks for the replies

The brass fittings, while not exactly elegant, is probably the best idea for retaining the functional aspect of it. The factory exposed it to the coolant for a reason. I doubt the brass fittings would affect it at all, as long as it's still exposed to coolant.
