Aftermarket tach into Fac. harness?
Decided to post as a new thread. I was wondering if i removed the factory tach.(88 305tbi) Would i be able to plug some of my wires coming of my aftermarket (VDO top eliminator)tach. into some of the slots that my factory one plugged into. I searched the forums and couldnt really find anything touching this subject.
Re: Aftermarket tach into Fac. harness?
are you planning on installing this in the dash or mounting it off to the side like a monster tach?? if you pull the cluster there should be a plug that the cluster goes into that has all the wires you would need to tap. ign, ground, illumination and the tach signal should be all that you need. you can probably do a search and find what the wire colors are for those specific wires. Thats exactly what i was hoping to hear. that will save me a lot of time and work. And ya ill be mounting it to the side. What i plan on doing is pulling the stock tach out and pluging my vdo wire(s) into them, but so it doesnt look like crap ( huge space where the gage used to be) ill be running my new wires through a small slot that leads inside the dash, plug the wires in, then screw/bolt the old tach into the origanal spot, but with a couple of tiny washers so that theyl be just enough clearance for my new wires, and it wont be notiable. wow, as i said before i ramble..
lol, thanks for the help. Also when i do this ill post which wires are what on the harness.

I'd just leave the old tach functional. you can still tap into the wires thats what I did on my bird.

I just kept it out, the only thing is now i dont have a oil pres. gage, i im getting a cooler one. as for the space were it used to be, i put a piece of aluminum there to fill it in, and i can now mount so new gages there, ie oil, trans temp ect. i mounted the new tach to the side, because i have a 92 firbird steering collom, which makes it hard to read the tach.,
