Gauge swap
I have a basemodel firebird (was a v6) but its a V8 now.
Im wondering, if I get a tach from a camaro or firebird, and hook it up with the wire coming off my coil, non CC HEI.
Would the tach work?

Re: Gauge swap
there is a post to be found in the search bar a guy took the time to really explain the swap very well writen step by step and took all the guess work out I just did this on my V/6 V/8 camaro it was a snap (plugin) my only ? is are u talking just the tach?? I would hit some J yards and find a complete gauge cluster from a trans am as when I did my camaro I got all the real gauges with it instead of the idot lights remember to grab the oil/temp sensors

Re: Gauge swap
I did the same thing, changed from dummy lights to gauges, but I never could get the stock tach to work, even tried another tach w/ different results. Apparently the stock tachs are notorious for being bad. rest of the gauges were a breeze.

Also worth noting is that since your car now has a V8 be sure to get a V8 Tach. V6 Tachs are not plug and play with a V8 engine and require an aftermarlet converter.
I just placed this on the classified section today: Interested?

P.S. It's got a V6 cluster in it but I have a couple V8 style as well.

Re: Gauge swap
Yup,........
Dakota Digital makes them. I had to get one of thier VSS boxes too due to a T56 swap.
My Speedo & Tach are factory digital like yours and when it hit 4400 RPM ( Limit for the original LG4) the thing would flash like crazy making it hard to read at a glance. By Adding the V6 Tach it will start flashing at a more reasonable 5500 RPM ( 2.8 V6 Limit ) that is much closer to my 355ci engines limits.
Here's a pic of my Tach converter: ( SGI-8B )
