90 camaro not starting.
90 camaro not starting.
I just had to replace my steering column in my 90 camaro. The I ran in to a problem with the VATS security system. It says on the internet that if you have the wrong chip in your key then it shuts down the fuel pump and starter. So I bought a new vats ignition switch. The fuel pump now works but my car wont start still. All the lights work all the gages work, but the engine doesnt even make a sound, the only thing you can hear is the fuel pump turning on. If you know whats wrong please let me know.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: 90 camaro not starting.
Did you just replace the ignition switch or did you replace the VATS module under the dash as well? If you simply replaced the ignition switch then you still won't be able to start the car because the value of the resistor pellet on the key is stored in the VATS module under the dash and if the two don't match then you get no start.
What I would have done, and you should do if you still can, is taken the ignition switch out of your old steering column and installed it in the new steering column. That way you still have the same key/ignition switch/VATS that you had originally and everything should work.
Other than that, you might check the ignition harness connectors on the top of the steering column and make sure the connectors are fully seated and locked in place.

if you are using the key from the other car then your car will not start. what you can do is ohm out the old key and go to the lock smith and tell them what number you need then have your new key traced. if you look through tgo (i don't remember where) it tells what ohm = what key number. Re: 90 camaro not starting.
had the same problem, just take the original key to a gm dealer and they can test it for the code. Then buy a same coded key from the dealer @$23, and have it cut to match the new column. you may want to bring proof of registration as some dealers take the whole VATS security more serious than others

Re: 90 camaro not starting.
Just replaced my steering column in my 90 Irocz with a steering column that was out of a 91 camaro rs at least i was told. I got the steering column in the car but when you turn the key i get all the way to the fuel pump activating but no starter. I replaced the ignition switch with the one with my original column and still at the same place. Turning the key to all settings does everything its suppose to but it won't activate the starter. Using a proven ignition that would work even after the guy tried to steal the car the key would start with the use of pliers. But with the new column nothing. Any help would be much appreciated!
Also one thing I didn't mention...I didn't disconnect my battery while changing out the column as I have a aftermarket steering wheel with no airbag so I didn't think I needed to.

Re: 90 camaro not starting.
Found my problem...the rod wasn't able to push down far enough on top of the steering column to activate the starter. Adjusted the plastic piece on top of the steering column and good to go now.
