Electrical Issues

Hello all, I have an 88 Camaro with alot of electrical problems. My Step-Dad tried to put my Stereo in and shorted out something in the dash wiring. None of my Interior lights work, and the only night driving lights that work are the headlights. I am completely stumped, and not all that electrically inclined. I'd like to avoid taking it to a shop, but if I have to do so i'll shell out the cash.

Sounds like the battery was not disconnected prior to the Stereo work

You might want to vist this link and look at Figures 38 and 39. Figure 39 will have the fuse block for the 88 model year. You might want to verify that all the fuses are ok.

Since you have so many non function circuits, it sounds like one or more fusible links (located in various places in the engine compartment, near the battery and starter) were melted. If that is the case, they will need to be indentifed and replaced. You will have to decide if you want to do that or take it to a shop.

It is also possible that the insulation on one or more wires was melted by the heat created by the excessive current draw. If this is the case they will have to be found and repaired, or you will continue to blow fuse and/or fusible links. Finding them can be a pain.

You will have to decide what you are comfortabe doing and what you may want to pay a shop to do.

Good Luck getting you car reparied

Dave
