fuel gauge reads 1/4 after........

Car: 91 RS, t-topped, man trans.
Engine: 350cid 350Hp crate motor
Transmission: t5 with new stock clutch and parts
Axle/Gears: 3.08 stock -RS
fuel gauge reads 1/4 after........

fuel gauge read full after a fill up. Then after approx 50 miles of driving it will STAY at 1/4 of a tank. Car is running rich and I get approx 240mi a tank. 5.7tbi swap. (i had the tbi5.0).

New guage cluster? run separte fuel gauge?
help a newbie out .

Sound to me like a fuel sending unit. Usually when the fuel sending unit goes bad the fuel guage reads wrong. Hope this helps(if I am right)

fuel sending unit inside the tank? or is it something i can change on the outside of the tank?

not too sure about these cars, but the sending unit is usually part of the fuel pump assy that pulls out the top of the tank. Most people on this site access that by cutting a hole in the floor under the carpet where the t-tops are stored. Not too sure if I would do that, but since it is a really indepth job I would at least consider it.

I would disagree, I think "most" people on this sight would not cut an access panel. I think "most" people on this sight would do it the right way and drop the tank.
