Convertible third brake light issues
Hey there IROC fans,
I drive an 88 IROC Z convertible and I am trying to get the third brake light that is in the spoiler to work. All five of my bulbs were burnt out and found the local parts store charged nearly $8 (and were only good for 300 hours)for each replacement bulb!!. So off to Home Depot I go and found some low wattage twelve volt that would work once I made a small adjustment to the "pins". Problem is the "pins" were still too small in diameter and any vibration shook them loose and they stoppped lighting. Went to a store called Bulbs Plus and bought a 10 watt-12 volt halogen replacement (should last 2000 hrs) and they had the right size pins but they lights no longer come on when I push the brake pedal???! It all worked before...any suggestions, a fuse that might be somewhere else in the car that governs the third brake light in a convertible? Looking for some help here--Much appreciated

Convert it over to LEDs kit for about $10.00. Do a search for the guy that is selling them. Did mine and very happy with the results.

Thanks DJP!,
I just recieved the Deluxe kit from Custom-Leds this evening and installed them in my IROC convertible, they look and work great! It only took about 10-15 minutes with easy to follow instructions and it only cost $10 which included shipping! I highly recomend this conversion...

That should cure your brake light problems. Also I was using the Radio Shack bulbs for a $1.99 for about 10 yrs before installing the Led Kit.

Re: Convertible third brake light issues
Are you testing them with the trunk open? The third brake lamp is powered through the spring-loaded contact that are on the trunk that make contact when the trunk is closed with the pad just to the left of the hatch motor. If the trunk was closed, then test the pad for voltage when the brakes are on. You may just need to take off some surface corrosion using a scotch-brite pad. Also the spring loaded pins could be bent or broken and not properly making contact with the pad below.

lonsal,
Thanks for the input but I already fixed my problem... I had cleaned all my contacts and did some general maintenance to my third brake light system. I then converted over to LED lights and now it works just great!
