Wire meltdown?

I have an 88 firebird. On the firewall (drivers side) there are a few relays with some prety heavy guage wire going to the connectors. Well, going into the connectors are wires but they are BARE. There a good 1 to 2 inches of bare wire before you see the insulation. Any idea what these relays are? Im assuming this is a common problem because every car in the salvage yard already had these missing.
