Power antenna removal questions?
Alright, last question regarding my electrical gremlins for this weekend, i promise :-p The power antenna does not work right now. When plugged in, it constantly runs. Not sure which way as the antenna doesn't move, I just hear the motor running. Now I really don't want to get too involved with it as I hate the power antennas anyway. I was wondering if I could replace it with a standard antenna or if the hole is different for whatever reason. Also, would there be any other issues I might run into? Anyone have any pictures of the removal process for their old power antenna? I have a Chilton manual and it is telling me to loosen the fender and pull it away from the body as well as removal of interior plastics, etc. to get this thing out. Can it be reached through just the plastic wheel well or do I have to pull the right front corner of my car apart right after painting it? Risking scratching it
. Anyway, any help here would be nice as the antenna is halfway up and bent and looks like crap right now.

I replaced my electric antenna with another electric antenna. You can't use just the universal ones because of the clearance issues. I got my replacement from JCWhitney. It's like a remote type is what i call it. The motor is seperate from the mast. Has a flexible tube between the two.
For removal it was rather easy. Just take the plastic inner fender piece off and it's right there. Piece of cake. I'm sure you could use just a straight antenna. Might have to get the different angled pieces to make it straight though. I don't have any pics of when i replaced mine, sorry. But it's pretty easy to get to.

Thanks. I was just going to hate life if I had to "block the fender out" away from the car to get to stupid antenna as the Chilton manual calls for.
Re: Power antenna removal questions?
Your welcome. That's why i use the Haynes Manuals. I did do this on my own though. I knew where the antenna was, so i decided to just take the inner fender out and there it was. lol. I do like the Haynes better then Chilton's though.

Re: Power antenna removal questions?
Yea, i know where it is. I had the air extractor out when I was painting and messed with the plug to find the motor stays running when plugged in. I just wanted to slap a stationary one in to make life easier, but have already put the body back together and couldn't see the antenna through the air extractor anymore. That's why I was hoping it would fit through the inner fender well. And I agree, Haynes are better manuals.

Make sure you get the fender mounting hardware from for the standard ant. when you pull one from a doner. Thw power ant. hardware and the standard ant. hardware are different.
On the inside of the car you will need to remove the pass kick panel and the pash hush panel as well as pull the radio for access to remove and install the ant at the stereo end.
Last - Make sure the standard ant. is from an 89 and up car. The earlier radios used a bigger ant plug.
Hope this helps !
