confused about rear defrost

i went to the local boneyard and i found rear glass with defrost. i pull the glass the purple wire the black wire and the switch. i hooked up everything and what do you know the defrost isnt working. the grid looks to be in good condition. the switch has power cause the 2 button lights come on but when you push the switch the light that is supposed to stay on doesnt even light up. i was just wondering if there is anything else i can look through to see if i can fix it before taking it to an auto electric shop? i searched an could come up with a close enough answer to my situation. so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you get the timer module with it?

Re: confused about rear defrost

isnt the time built into the switch or is it something different. because if it is something different then no.

Yeah it is actually, nevermind. Are you sure you've got a good ground at the hatch?

What's your voltage between the orange/black wire and the purple/white wire at the switch?

Re: confused about rear defrost

i swapped my 82 hatch glass back to defroster grid type from one of the camaros i junked last fall/year

this thread makes me wonder if mine works or not, the grids and leads and everything are in good shape

if you need any pics of anything, or such from inside of mine in which is mostly gutted currently then lemme know

pics from just after swapping to defroster glass:

good luck

Re: confused about rear defrost

i have been re-organizing the house and i found that i have a test light and i found my multi meter. i am embarrassed to say i dont know how to use the meter. and i am iffy on the light. never got to much into how electronics worked but can usually hook stuff up. i have patience if someone cares to give me the step by step. i will have time this weekend to play. so... again any help is greatly welcomed.

Re: confused about rear defrost

There is a relay and a wiring harness for it, that goes under the console. The current demand of that grid is VERY high, so they don't run all that through the little weenie switch; the switch operates the relay, and the relay sends the high power to the heater grid.

Sounds like you're missing all of that stuff in the console.

Re: confused about rear defrost

The wiring diagrams in the repair manual show all the relay contacts and timer circuitry being contained within the switch/control.

On your meter to measure voltage, you'll need to put the black lead in the COM terminal, the red one in the VΩmA terminal, and turn the **** to the "DCV 20" position.
