short somewhere frying alternators

So here is my problem. My 88 IROC is cooking its alternator in about 15 minutes of drive time. I pulled the dash and interior out to do some other projects as well, so I started tracing wires while I was at it. There is a dead short to the accessory fuse so I know there is a problem somewhere after that. My question is that with that fuse pulled I'm still reading a 2 amp draw at the main terminals with the computer still in the car. This seems way too high to me, but I can't seem to find any reliable information as to what the acceptable load on the terminals should be. Any information or suggestions on the topic would be greatly appreciated
