"splice" vs. "tee"

In ******* "Total Fan Control" directions, he uses the word splice all through the first three pages. Then on page 4 he says "Splice (do not cut) into the green/white (or gray) wire with a new section of 18 gauge wire. In other words, "tee" into the existing wire."

Am I to understand that through the whole process I am not to cut any wire? I am to strip a small 1/4 inch piece then solder into that?

If so they how can I use a heat shrink tube? Isn't it better to cut so I can slip the heat shrink tube over?

thanks for the replys.

oscar , there is a product called liquid tape . should be able to find it at a marine supply store . i used it alot when i lived in fla. keys . after you make solder connection , clean flux off with acetone or similar cleaner , then brush on liquid tape . you may need to brush on several coats to get good coverage . make sure to re-clean between coats . the stuff works on saltwater corrosion ( the worst kind ) , also on our cars . i used to get it at napa & advance in key largo . check auto parts stores first , better than heatshrink . try it , you will like it .

Thanks Uncle Tom. I'll take a look for it and try it out.

Re: "splice" vs. "tee"

cutting the wires is not going to hurt anything. though a splice looks better. When you make you connection, try to spread the individual strands of wire and put you new "tap" through it and twist them all together to make a good mechanical connection before you solder. Solder itself should never be used as the sole mechanical bond between two wires.
