what are these 2 wires?

1989 camaro RS v8 305 >>TBI<< 700r4

i have 2 wires hanging down under my car.. its not running at this moment (no idea if its related but i have the distributor off anyways)

right next to the oil filter is where they drop down at the back of the engine..

they are purple and yellow together in a plastic tube thing (forgot the name.. refresh ma memory)

im sorry i dont know how else to describe them or their purpose.. but i cant get my car on ramps because its not running, and there is no jacks here that work right now ~ if you need anything else Please ask..

Re: what are these 2 wires?

Added information..

ive been searching around here (awesome place) for a while before and after these post.. and i have additional information that actully may be correct..

My car starts in any gear.. the nuetral safety switch is completly disabled.. this really isnt a problem for me because i know how to shift to nuetral before starting it up.

if they are my nuetral safety switch wires.. can i clip then off or tie them off and not care? or is there some serious ill effects to the pcm, emc, or anything from having these disconnected?

Re: what are these 2 wires?

The purple and yellow, are they THICK or THIN?
If thin, they are the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) wires. The thing, though, is that your car shouldn't have a VSS (they started in 1990 on Camaros), unless somebody did an engine swap.
If the wires are thick, those might be some starter wires but that wouldn't make sense either because they should be INSIDE!

Got a digital camera? A picture of the connector would tell us a lot.

Re: what are these 2 wires?

Two thin wires would point to the VSS. But as I said, Camaros didn't have a VSS before 1990. Was the engine swapped by a chance?

As long as the car runs, you're ok.

Re: what are these 2 wires?

camaros had a VSS, it didn't run the speedometer like the 90+ VSS but it did tell the computer that there was a transmission and that the car was moving.

Re: what are these 2 wires?

Yes, they had a VSS but it was the optical sensor on the back of the speedometer. Not the standard VSS in the tranny tailshaft.

Hope this helps.

Ahhh yes, you are correct. I could have sworn there was still an electric sensor on the transmission, my bizzle.

Thanks Lou, I take it you've been out this way being that you call it Bayern. What part of ATX are you in? I grew up in South Austin.

You're kidding, you grew up in Austin? Sorry, SOUTH Austin? And moved to Europe? Funny. I grew up in Europe and moved to Austin. I used to live a few hundred km east of you. Moravia.

Sorry for littering this thread, we can take it to PMs.

Like I said, as long as the car runs, you're ok.
They might be left over from an engine swap.
Do they have a connector on them or are they just cut?

Cheers
Lou

Re: what are these 2 wires?

I did a T-65 swap on my 85 T/A and I have similar wires hanging down. They are for my reverse lights. Try and see if they work. That's the problem sometimes getting these cars second (or even forth hand), you never know what other people before you have done.

Re: what are these 2 wires?

The reverse switch wires are usually green and blue. And they would be under the car only for the 5-sp cars, not automatics.
