A/C trouble???

Ok I have a 1989 GTA with 24,XXX miles and I'm wondering why is the A/C isnt working. Was there something wrong with the A/C systems in our cars years.

Hope you guys can help me thanks.

I dont plan on driving it just one of the routine check ups and noticed it forever but now just asking why?

When was the last time the ac was used? In many cases where a car is not operated very often, the seals in the ac system can dry out providing a convenient escape for the refrigerant. The best way to fix it would be to reseal the system and recharge. hope this helps answer your question.

I have the same car as your's. Similar mileage too.

You can lose a bit of refrigerant during the cold months of the year. Over time it can leak out around the seals yet still be fine the rest of the year. This is why in a 2.25 lb system, you might have 1.5 lbs still in there. If it was an actual leak, then you wouldn't have any refrigerant left in there.

Is it working at all? Is the compressor turning on? Is it cycling on/off, on/off way too often?

What kind of duct temperatures are you getting? (I use a kitchen probe thermometer)

Yeah, I'd say you're a tad low on R-12. The compressor won't run long enough to get the system cold. If you had pressure gauges on there, you'd see the low side dropping to about 25 psi and then going back to 45 psi in rapid fashion.

Probably need about a half a can of R-12 in there. Maybe 1 can. Hard to say without actually measuring the charge.

With your car being low mileage, it's probably been a summer car only since day 1. Same as me (I have about 35,000 miles on mine). So I'd say your air conditioning system itself is probably in like new condition. Nothing worn out. You probably just need a top up.
