Speedometer Question
I am currently working on swapping my 91 formula from an auto to a 5 speed and need some info on how to make the speedometer work correctly. The transmission I have is from an 86 camaro so it has a cable drive output, but my car has an electrical speedo. How to I convert the cable output to an electrical signal so that my speedo will work?

Re: Speedometer Question
Welcome to TGO. I believe all you need do is plug your VSS into the tail shaft of the manual tranny. At any rate, a search will provide more info.

Re: Speedometer Question
Yup, do a search, you're not the only person to run into that.
Btw, your automatic VSS was much bigger than what you need for the T5. You'll probably have to special order it from a parts store. Also, you'll need to go to the stealership and order the correct plastic gear for your gear/tire combination.
Hope this hels.

Re: Speedometer Question
I'm still not having much luck with my speedometer. I found a VSS that threads directly to the output of the mechanical gear on the transmission and converts it to an electronic signal, but my speedometer is way off. The only way I could get it to read at all was to hook up the signal wire directly to the speedo. Even with it hooked direct, it reads about 10 when I'm going 25, 20 when I'm going about 50, etc. Does anyone have any advice on what to try?

Re: Speedometer Question
You can change the plastic gears in the mechanical pickup.
Or you can get one of the digital converter boxes for the electric signal. However, converting the speed UP would be very imprecise, I'd rather do the mechanical gear change.
