Wiring both radiator fans question
Wiring both radiator fans question
I am interested in running my fans together all the time. I am thinking of getting a replacement sending unit for the passenger side fan that turns the fan on at a lower temp. 180? I would like to disable the ECM drivers side fan and wire it to come on at the same time the passenger side comes on. Can I just jump a wire from the secondary fan relay to the primary ECM relay? So the trigger wire from the secondary fires the relay for the first one? Will this work when the A/C isn't charged? And cut the feed from the ECM? Will it require a/c pressure to complete the secondary circuit? I wouldn't think so but you never know. How do I find out what color all these wires are?

Re: Wiring both radiator fans question
Why do you need to run both fans at the same time? And at 180 degrees? Is your car overheating? That would be a problem of the cooling system, not the fans. You should take a look at the radiator, thermostat, hoses etc.
I run my car in the 115F heat in Texas and have no problems with cooling, my primary fan kicks in only if I'm sitting in traffic and the temp rises.
But if you want to rewire your car, you can find the primary and secondary fan relays on the firewall, cut the green/white wire off the primary relay (MAKE SURE it's the right relay, you don't want to cut your fuel pump relay!!) and splice it into the grey wire on the secondary relay. Then you can replace the hi-temp coolant switch with a low-temp unit (they cost upward of $30) or if you want, I have a 180degree switch that you can mount anywhere (no need to pull the old one out, drain the coolant etc).
Your A/C will work fine, it has a separate switch. Also, the fans will work fine without the A/C.
Hope this helps.

Re: Wiring both radiator fans question
Thanks! I am trying to keep the pressures down in the cooling system because of a "leak" that can't be fixed easily. Going to use a 180 thermostat if it doesn't cause any driveablility problems.
Thank you

Re: Wiring both radiator fans question
Turbo, I went with a Jet part #60600 fan switch from Summit that turns the secondary fan on at 200 and off at 185. When the ECM sees the secondary fan on it turns the primary on so when my fans come on by the fan switch they both run until it cools down to 180-185. I also have a manual toggle for each fan and an LED wired to each relay so I know when the fan/fans are on. I also use a Stewart EMP-301 thermostat which is a 180 and it has 3 5/16ths bypass holes machined in it so it always has some flow.
Re: Wiring both radiator fans question
Thanks Jim. I have the hypertech switch on order. I will see if my primary fan kicks on when the secondary does before I start cutting wires. I now have a plan. Thanks!
