84 trans am computer?

I am not positive if this is the right forum, so i apologize if it isnt.

I have a 1984 trans am which i recognize has a computer controlled carb just like my old monte ss.. but do I have an actual computer controlling it or is it a closed loop between the carb and distributor? I am removing all emissions components and want to eliminate every wire I dont need.. and this thing has a ton of wires.... So do I actually have a computer somewhere? And any info on what wires I can axe since i am going with an ancient motor combo (68 model 327), ditching the stock carb/hei and no emissions BS.

Thanks!

Yes, if there is a TPS & an MCS connector on the carb, and an extra connector to a distributor w/o a vacuum bell then you have a computer somewhere. It's usually in the passenger foot area. Be aware that the converter lockup will be disabled when removing the computer. Kits can be had to replace that function. Wiring can usually be removed as a complete assembly, just follow it when you find the ECM.

Your CLCC quadrajet has an ECM that is located behind the glovebox area of the dash. Pull the kick panel in the passenger footbox and the ECM is held in place by two screws. It'll drop down into the footbox. The wiring goes through the passenger-side fender and into the engine compartment. You can disconnect the harness without cutting it by pulling the big clip on the bulkhead connector, then feeding it through into the fender.

Too bad about that Qjet: I ran mine up until the time when I converted to fuel injection: During it's last season in operation, it (with the 305 H.O.) gave me 21 MPG on the highway and the car was running 14.00 at 101 MPH. THe dyno read 262 RWHP when we tested it. I liked that carbuerator combination. Let's see how your 327's performance stacks up when you are done!

Actually some EXPORTED cars did not recieve an ECM. If you have one you remove the lower trim panel and there are two 7mm screws that hold it up (usually the thing furthest to the right. Usually you can spot it because there is a bunch of wires coming out of the ECM.
