89 5.7 TPI California A/T Correct Prom #?

Need your help please. I need correct prom #/code for the above application for the dreaded smog test in Cali. Can only find Federal listings.

Thanks in advance. Oh, if you have choices would be as close to 2.88 rear end ratio as we can get.

Thanks again.

Clive.

What part of California are you in?

There is so little difference between a Federal and CA chip you can use either one. AUJN is for an 89' 350 TPI.

There is no 2.88 ratio rear end in our cars. I'm guessing you meant 2.77 ratio.

Re: 89 5.7 TPI California A/T Correct Prom #?

Hi thanks. I'm up the coast in Paso Robles. My dilemma is that I started to transplant this motor combo into an 89 Jaguar XJS convertible (2.88 ratio)and since moved to Ca from NV. Being a Chevy and Jag man this seemed to be the best of both of my worlds!
The prom that it has been running according to the smog referee is from a 87 TBI so I need the correct. The referee is doing more "research" on the prom issue which leaves me afraid he will come back with bad news as to the swap. So, I am trying to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible.

All I am finding so far is the Fed version which leads me in to thinking that there was no Ca 350 in 89? Although I am starting to find some info on a Pontiac GTA maybe for CA? What ever happens I need a different chip so thanks for that and of course will need to disable VATS. The smog book shows a 350 available I just need to substantiate this.

Thanks for your help so far. Much appreciated.

There is a big difference between a TPI computer and a TBI computer, and you cannot run a TBI chip inside a TPI computer, nor vice versa. What are the numbers and letters on your computer and prom chip now?

A friend of mine just put a '95 LT1 engine into a 1990 Jaguar XJS convertible and got it thru the referee, so it is possible to do engine swaps.

I'll have to dig out the prom # I believe it was an AJN in a 1227165 however that's still not the issue even though I know it need to be changed. What I really need to know/prove is that the 350/700r4 TPI set up was available in Ca. in 89 and then find a relevant Ca. Prom. I don't My referee isn't being unreasonable and he will pass it subject to a few "minor" mods.

Here's a though; will a chip from a 305 work just as good as far as running and drive-ability etc?

Once again thanks for your time and help. LT1, now thats the way to go. Unfortunately I am going to sell mine once it's done as I need the cash. Bummer, but the mortgage biz just ain't what it used to be!!!

Thanks again,

Clive.

Yes you could use a 305 TPI chip. It will run ok but it will not run as well. Your biggest problem with using an '89 chip is it will have the VATS security system in it, and the Jaguar will not. The ECM will not turn on the injectors. You will need either a custom chip made for you, (which I could do), or you will need to research the various ways to bypass the VATS completely. (search these boards, its been done.)
