how do you know if the chip in your key is bad

is there a way to bypass this ?

Grab a DMM and measure the pellet's resistance. There 15 different resistances out there. If yours isn't in the set, your pellet might be bad. http://tpiparts.net/vehicle_anti_theft_system__vats_
However, thid doesn't happen too often.
There are usually different problems with VATS (ign. cylinder, column wiring etc). Do a search and you'll find a lot of answers, not only how to destroy it but alsoo how to fix it right.

will the car just spinn over and not start or will it be like a bad solenoid and not do anything?
