Need pic. of neutral safety switch please...
I am thinking maybe my no start problem is due to the neutral safety switch. My crappy Chilton manual is no help @ all for this. I was hoping somone could please send me/put up a picture of one to help me out & possibly describe where it is located. If my N.S.S. was fried would that mean that my reverse/back up lights would not work? Thanx again.
Sincerely,
Desperate

Re: Need pic. of neutral safety switch please...
I have an 88 Iroc and just replaced mine last weekend. Fixed her right up. Been starting ever since.
It is located by the gear selector. Take out those 6-8 mini torx bolts that hold down the gear selector cover and the ash tray. As you look at the handle that you push the button down to put it into Drive etc... on the right side there is a silver (looks like a brake pad but all silver) half moon box. It is held in with two bolts. It isn't hard to get out. The wiring harness plugs into the switch on the radio side (can't miss it). the only wiring harness in there (that has more than two wires). Undo the wiring harness and a little finagling and out she comes. To put the new one in, it looks like the little tit isn't going to fit in the slot. It will, just put pressure on the out side and it will slide right on in. Make sure it goes all the way in. Should poke through the gear selector handle atleast 1/8 of an inch. Hook up the harness and replace the cover and bolts. Thats all she wrote.
Hope it works out for you. Here are some of the symptoms that mine had. Sometimes it would start and be fine for days and sometimes she would sit for days because she wouldn't start. My recommendation is to by the new one first and that way when you pull those torx screws out you can see where it is. Took my 14 year old 25 minutes to replace mine.

The NSS has three pairs of wires: for the starter, the reverse lights and idle.
If your backup lights don't work and you verified that it's not the lightbulbs and you can't start the car, it could be the NSS yes.
Let us know if it fixes it! Others with the same problem will probably find this thread and a good closure is always beneficial.

Re: Need pic. of neutral safety switch please...
blove,
when you had a bad neutral safty switch and the car would not start did it run for a couple seconds then die or would not start at all. My car will start and run for about 2 seconds and then dies. Was wondering if that might be my problem.
thanks

The neutral switch only affects the starter. If it's bad, the starter won't turn. It won't have anything to do with your problem.
