Almost caught fire! please help
ok ... so when i bought my camaro a year ago, they guy told me that he keeps the cig lighter out of the dash because it always blows a fuse. So I tested it and for about a year now it has worked fine with n/p. Well then just recently I started to blow my ACC fuse. I didnt remember to think that it might be the cig lighter and I just kept changing the fuse while I was trying to decode the problem. Then on the way to work one day I noticed smoke rolling out from under my dash and mostly comming from behind the lighter! I freaked out and pulled out the lighter. It wasnt red but it was hot and the smoke stopped. Can anyone maybe shed some light on why this happend?? I havent used the lighter ... ever lol. but since i have kept it out and i havent blown a fuse or caught fire lol in a few weeks.... any help would be very appreciated!

I suspect that you have the hot wire grounding on something. If you pull the cig lighter socket out, i suspect it will be really obvious.

Re: Almost caught fire! please help
I had a short in my cig lighter and it was caused by the edge of the bi-metal contact spring clip shorting to the sorrounding metal cylinder. I just used a small screwdriver to bend it in a little. The bi-metal spring is the thing that holds in the lighter until it gets hot enough to cause the bi-metal to bend outwards and release the lighter.
Sometimes the short can be caused by a small metal object finding its way into the lighter.
Use a small flashlight and inspect it closely, and/or pull it out like drknow says.
