headlights problem

i have a 1992 camaro and my problem is with the headlights. i had the lights on and they were working perfectly fine when they suddenly went. neither the low and high beams work and the high beam symbol on the dash does not turn on either. any suggestions on what this may be?? i checked the fuses and no problems.

Re: headlights problem

Your headlight do not work as you stated.

But do your parking and directional lights in the front of the car work?

If none of those lights work then maybe you lost a ground connection between where they ALL ground to the negative post of the battery. Although they usually have a ground for the driver's side lights and a ground for the passenger's side lights they ALL need to somehow JUMP over to eventually contact the negative battery POST. ONE or more of those JUMP conductors may be damaged or missing.

That type of problem would allow the fuse to remain intact yet all the front lights would no longer function.

You could try running a separate (temporary) ground wire from the negative battery POST to the place where your headlights make a ground connection. If your lights work when that wire is connected then it pretty much means you have to trace through your existing ground connections to find the trouble spot(s).

Let us know how things turn out.

Re: headlights problem

OH, IT'S DEFINITELY THE HEADLIGHT RELAY!!

Ok, now seriously: all these lights have separate grounds. So it doesn't sound to me like a ground problem (since the hi-beam indicator in the dash doesn't light up either - and it has its own separate ground).

What can you gain access to easier? The headlight switch (in the dash) or the dimmer switch (on top of the steering column)? I'd start checking for power there. If there is no power to the dimmer switch with the headlight switch in the On position, it sounds like the headlight switch went south.

If you need diagrams to see which wire is which, try here: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

Hope this helps.

Re: headlights problem

Awesome! Another happy customer.
So it wasn't on low OR high? It was in the middle or something?
