plenty of power except on launch? help please

went to the strip this week and was running strong for most of the night.. right at the end my car started falling on it's face right off the line, almost stalling even, i would let out and get back in it and it would rocket through the rest of the track... could this be an ignition issue? my set up is a zz4 crate motor with fast burn aluminum heads, msd 6a ignition, new plugs, not so new wires, and not sure how old distributor....

a guy at the track said worn out distributers will start acting up when they get hot and i made sever passes right in a row... is there any truth to this?

I've seen ignition modules act up when hot, but I wouldn't imagine the distributor itself would be affected by heat. It sort of sounds like a fuel issue though, are you running a carb? I'm wondering if it could be related to the accelerator pump, either not working, or flooding the engine with too much fuel.
