Slow blinkers and Windows. Weak door locks

Hi guys: I’m new to the sight and forums here but I will do my best.

THE HISTORY: I have a 1986 Trans AM 305 5.0L TPI with Automatic 4 speed transmission. The car sat for about 4 to 6 years without even being turned over. The car has 209,000 miles on it and is in great shape. I’m the second owner and the car has always been garaged or under a car cover. There was a new motor put in 12-29-1995, at the time the car had 151,313 miles. I want to sell the car so I need to fix this problem.

THE PROBLEM: The blinkers are slow and the windows are slow as well. The door locks will unlock using the electric lock switch but won’t lock. They lock most of the way just not completely. They look locked but you can still open the doors. Now there has been 2 or 3 times now while driving the car that I notice the blinkers flashing faster, not like they should but none the less faster. When this happened I noticed the door locks worked and the windows where faster as well. This didn’t last long for all is slow again.

THINGS TO KNOW: I have put in a new flasher. The Alternator and battery are new as well. Everything works and the car has never been damaged or crashed and almost every part ever replaced has been replaced with a OEM part and not aftermarket, even the new Engine is a AC DELCO OEM Remanufacture by GM. The car sat for 4 to 6 years and had a charged battery in it when parked but had to be replaced after taking the car from storage and finding it dead and not able to save.

Thank you for your help guys and let me know if you need more information.

3rd gen windows are slooowwwww, even with new motors they're no where near as fast as newer cars. It's just something we have to live with.

The locks: You need to pull the door panels and grease the locking mechanisms. Mine did the same thing until I greased them and sat in the car for 15-20 minutes just hitting the lock-unlock buttons back and forth. Now they work great.

Slow blinkers: I wish I had slow blinkers. It sounds like your car is a perfect candidate for the STS (sequential turn signal) mod. I've got STS on my car and I would love it if the signals blinked slower.

Welcome to TGO. Clean everything with WD-40, then lube with white lithium grease (window tracks as well as locking mechs. You may be surprised that the windows will be a fit faster). As you'll be in the door anyway, consider the following link:

Re: Slow blinkers and Windows. Weak door locks

Thank you guys for all your time and help but my problem is not cosmetic. My windows are only slow when the blinkers are slow and the door locks are weak only when the windows and blinkers are slow.because of this a fave to assume the problems are related and will all fix with one solution.

The lube advice is good you should do that.

However your voltage IS varying therefore:

Get a test instrument quality voltmeter and connect it to the battery.

With the engine at 1,500 RPM observe the voltage.

Immediately after you start a cold engine you should have at least 13.5 volts on the battery.

After it warms to full operating temperature you should have at least 12.5 volts.

You might have one of those alternators which turns off at idle.

24 hours after you shut it down you should have 12 volts.

If not check for a current draw.

Re: Slow blinkers and Windows. Weak door locks

Thank you for your reply.
I have tested the voltage and I have a new Battery and Alternator.
Because the car sat for 5 years I thought that would be a good idea and a good place to start. I have put in a new TPS and still dont think its right. The voltage should be set to 0.54 and i cant get it over 0.21 to 0.23. Im starting to wonder if my ECM is bad. What do you think?

Re: Slow blinkers and Windows. Weak door locks

Try cleaning the ground at the battery as well as where it attaches to the motor and frame under the hood. Do the same for the positive cable(s). A good heavy cleaning with wire brush and a fresh coat of dielectric grease can't hurt.

Re: Slow blinkers and Windows. Weak door locks

someone should get a video of how fast the windows are supposed to open and close. I know they seem pretty slow on my car, and the driver one is a little faster than the passenger one.
