hatch motor wont pull hatch down!!

i read a few posts and couldnt really find anything besdies shorted out wiring but my problem is that the motor sounds like it is working just fine but wont grab onto the hatch and pull it down. i even moved up the whole assembly and the motor just stays on continuously. even pushing in on the part that makes the motor engage doesnt do anything but make the motor run. i checked grounds and looked at the wiring and it all looks fine. does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem is and how to fix it. car is an 87 with the manual hatch release. thanks

Re: hatch motor wont pull hatch down!!

Inside the mechanism, there is a plastic gear. Order one from topdown solutions and they will ship it out to you asap! It's an easy fix. The gear only cost $7. First take apart your mechanism, to make sure the gear IS stripped ( you can see if it has any teeth missing. Also, while you're at it, check the plastic guides. If they are all broken up you will have to changed them out. They cost $24

Good Luck!

Re: hatch motor wont pull hatch down!!

Strange you couldn't find a post regarding this problem, considering I must have posted the cause, solution, cost to repair it and where to get the part.

OK, here we go again. Constantly running motor = bad gearnut. TDS p/n 109111, $7.95. While you're ordering the part from my web site be sure to download the instructions for the 10170 aftermarket nylon guides from the lower left side of my web site under "Documentation". Actually you most likely need new guides too. That is probably why the gearnut broke in the first place. Easy to diagnose bad guides. Grab hold of the latch portion and see if you get movement side-to-side or front-to-back. If so replace the guides too.
