Ignition problem...Switch or cylinder??
So this morning when my girlfriend got up to go to work, she starts it like normal but as soon as it starts it shuts off a efw seconds later and she tried to start it again but the ignition she says moves really freely but it wont start back up. Her dad tooka look and said its probably the ignition switch, I havent gotten over there yet but I want too have an idea before I get there. Could it be the ignition switch like he thinks and if so how hard is it to replace and any idea pon price? Thanks alot
also: the key comes out just fine its not stuck in the ignition or anything its just very loose. the ignition wont start the car at all.

Re: Ignition problem...Switch or cylinder??
First thing pull the trim panel off under the steering column. There are 2 rods running down the column going to the white plastic switch assemblies screwed to the column. One is the high beam going in to round thing. The other stays flat going between the ignition switch housing and the column. If this rod isn't moving when you turn the key back and forth, somethng broke in the collar behind the steering wheel. You'll have to pull the wheel, lock ring (snap ring), canceling cam (slipped on), turn signal switch toggle (4 screws) and you should be down to the cylinder.
If the rod moves, you'll have to lower the column. 2 nuts at bracket holding it up to dash and 3 screws at the firewall. If you unbolt the shaft cross pin and separate the shaft in the engine compartment you can pull the whole mess out after unplugging all the wires. If its an airbag car, don't let the steering wheel spin or you'll break the clock spring.
...easy.
Ignition switches and/or cylinders are $15 new at RockAuto online.
