Dash Mounted Ignition Switch

http://www.autozone.com/R,1032092/st...ductDetail.htm

I was looking around online and came across this universal dash mounted ignition switch. Looks pretty cool to me. Im actually thinking about getting one for my dash. I'm assuming its the same as my ignition switch now since its available for camaros. Just switch over all the wires to this one and mount it on the dash. I'll be leaving my original one in just not connected this one could be like a security feature you know if someone trys to steal the car their going to go for the regular ignition and probably leave this one alone especially if i put it so its somewhat hidden. Anyone else done somethin like this before and have any advice or tips?

You would still need to turn the original ignition to unlock the steering wheel. So you'd have to put in and turn 2 keys to start the car.

still might be worth it as an additional security measure. Im still debating though. What if I removed the original cylinder completely? Would that leave the wheel unlocked? and just put the plastic cap back on to give it the apperance that its still there

Re: Dash Mounted Ignition Switch

Then all you would have is a car with an ignition switch but no column lock making it, if anything, easier to hot wire. Also, you'll have to trick VATS.

Re: Dash Mounted Ignition Switch

It's not the cylinder that locks the wheel. You'd have to remove either the spring-loaded pin that engages the lock ring or the lock ring itself to unlock the steering wheel. The "plastic thing" as you call it is a part of the lock cylinder, i'm not sure there is a way to separate it. You could use it as a secondary lock for the ignition but all someone would have to do is find it and hotwire it. It doesn't really look like a "security" type key so it probably wouldn't be hard to get around if someone has at least a little bit of knowledge.

jcca - According to his info, he's got an 82. VATS is 89 & up.

Re: Dash Mounted Ignition Switch

i wont be using that actual one its just the first one i came across.
I'll probably just hook it up under the dash or somewhere hidden and leave the original in and have 2 seperate keys to start it.
