Steering Colum Help
I have a 1990 Firebird with an airbag but the steering colum is busted up, I have found a steering colum from a 1988 Camaro with no airbag will it work meaning will it clip right in (wiring clips), or make a difference that the 88 didnt have an airbag. Thanks

Re: Steering Colum Help
If it has no air bag internals - than it will not have an air bag - no big deal.
The real problem is that your car has a VATS security system and the 88 column doen't have a VATS ignition. It might be possible to place the 90 VATS ignition cylinder inside the 88 column...... I have never tried. You could also remove the ignition from the 90 coulmn, plug it back in with the key in it turned to the RUN position, and then tuck it behind the dash. ( it could be used as a second "kill" ignition if you wanted to ) Then you would just use the 88 column and key normally.
Your last option would be to find the correct VATS resistor value for your car and then bypass the VATS completely.

Re: Steering Colum Help
If you do not address the VATS system - the car will NOT start. I listed your only 3 options in my last post.
1) bypass the VATs
2) try to install the VATs ignition key cylinder into the 88 column,
3) remove the VATs ignition from the original column, Plug it back in, place the key in it and turn it to RUN, then hide it behind the dash ( use it as a "KILL" switch if you want )
** Also look at each turn signal stalk to check that those options are compatable. Do they both have Cruise, Do they both have Delay wipers ?? Not much of a big deal, but if you want to keep cruise and the new column doesn't have it,.............At least you know ahead of time !

Re: Steering Colum Help
In the end though, it worked excellently and you would never know the modification was made. It is not visable, and the ignition cyl. is nice and tight in it's bore.
