its not working, it way off. if i give it a little gas the tach goes crazy. anybody see this before and is there a fix

do a search for "fixing a tachometer" or something to that effect. This is a common problem and some members have had success soldering a resistor on one of the circuit boards on the back of the gauge cluster. I have a 91 RS with the dame problem but I haven't got around to fixing it yet. Or you could scrap it and buy a new aftermarket tach. Good luck!

 

Problem: My tach would peg out and stay that way even after shutting the engine off. I would take it apart a move the needle back to the start position and as soon as I turned it on it would peg out again.

Fix: I did a search, found where the "chip" was located on the back of the cluster (your have to take the cluster itself apart) and "jumped" pins 4 and 9(maybe it was 10). I also searched for the correct amount of resistance online they were saying 190 ohms I found 90 ohms was plenty.

I ran to Radio Shack bought some resitors and sodered them to get to get my 90 ohms and then soddered one end to the 4 pin and the other end to... well it was either 9 or 10 pin. It's not accurate but at low speeds and idle its reading pretty close.

I'm still searching for an actual fix, if I find one I will post it.
