Determining Problem with Opening Hatch?

I've got an '86 Trans Am and have problems with the hatch opening correctly. Pressing the button does basically nothing unless I have someone tug up on it at the same time of pressing the switch.

Got any ideas?

Can you hear a CLICK when you use the hatch release switch?

Re: HATCH LATCH

Only when someone is pulling on it while I press. Otherwise nothing happens at all. So I NEED two people to open my hatch. lol.

Because your description seems to indicate you’re getting power in and out of the switch the problem might be mechanical.

Also you didn’t indicate the gas lifts were not completing the raising once your helper lifted the hatch.

Therefore check the spring which flips the latch open for breaks / jams.

Check the latch for bends and binding.

Re: HATCH LATCH BATCH

No, the struts do not work. I have to hold the hatch up when it is open.

I'll check back there here in just a few moments. I'll get back with ya.

EDIT:
Alright, I went out there with the fiance and had her press the button while I tugged. Opened first try when two people are manning it. I pulled off the panel covering the pulldown motor and all that, but couldn't seem to locate any type of spring.

The spring will not be apparent.

It’s off to the side of the latch.

Also if the spring is broken or is missing obviously it won’t be seen.

If you’re mechanically inclined remove the mechanism and check for / replace the spring.

If you’re not mechanically inclined replace the entire mechanism.

It’s a faster pit stop that way.
