Resistance For V8 Tach
Resistance For V8 Tach
I'm converting a Camaro from a v6 to a v8. I've done this in the past so I know what needs to be changed (springs, mounts, etc). When it came to the tach, I always just replaced it with a v8 one (I always had one that matched...one benifit of parting out allot of cars). But this time I don't have one. I know that they are differnt and the v6 tach will read higher then the actual engine speed. According to the write up in the Motor Swap thread it's possible to change the resitance.
9. The engine control module (ECM) from the V6 won't work. Use a V8 ECM. (You may be able to just change the PROM, depending upon the V6 & V8.) The V6 tachometer has a different resistance than the V8 tach. You can change the resistor, but it's typically easier to just get a V8 tach.
My questions is, does anyone know what the propper resistance for a v8 tach is? And where would I place said resistor? Should I remove the one from the v6 tach or would placing it inline in the signal wire work? If I did that, I would also need the resistance of the v6 tach...so I could arrive at the correct value.

Your modification is in the circuit inside the dash that moves the pointer.
It’s contained on a small plug-in PCB.
On the PCB you’ll see a resistor chip.
Desolder pins 4 & 10.
Use a 500K potentiometer.
Solder it across traces 4 & 10.
Move the potentiometer to half way.
Start the engine and compare the tach reading with a test equipment quality tach.
Dial it in, unsolder one side of the potentiometer, measure it and buy the matching resistor.
Happy Racing!

Re: Resistance For V8 Tach
