Tach, Timing, and Cruise problem
Tach, Timing, and Cruise problem
Hello everyone. I have a 1989 RS that is for the most part completely stock. It has the 305ci motor and has always run great until two weeks ago. I went to the grocery and everything was fine. When I came out the car started fine and ran great until I got to a stop light, then the car started missing and backfiring. It lasted for a few minutes then disappeared. A few days later the tachometer started flipping out and was wildly swinging around. Sometime later the cruise control also quit. The car currently will start and run fine, but there is a definite miss and a significant loss of power, the tach sits dead on 1000 rpm, but if I rev it up it will jump around without really showing anything.
I have done the following:
- New cap and rotor
- New spark plugs
- Checked the tack resistor pack and performed the 180k resistor mod (no effect)
I have searched the forums and have not found anything definitive, but have a sneaky suspicion that it is all related. Does anyone have a clue on this? Please assist.

Re: Tach, Timing, and Cruise problem
welcome to the site, but more info would be needed friend! What car, what year, engine, mods? Could be a bad sensor, or hell, a bad vacuum leak if FI...let us know!
Re: Tach, Timing, and Cruise problem
It is a 1989 Camaro RS with the 305 L03 motor. It has TBI and has a hypertech chip in it. I have never had a problem with it running rough. There are no other mods to the motor except a new water pump and a alternator, which have been on for the last year. The car sat for about 6 months. I guess the big question is if these parts (ignition control module or the Ignition Pickup) are bad, will it effect the cruise control and tach? If so, then that will be my fix, but if not then I wonder if there may be another problem... HELP??

Re: Tach, Timing, and Cruise problem
I'm having some ignition issues myself, but the fact that its also affecting the tach makes me think its your wires arching, or your blaster coil...

Re: Tach, Timing, and Cruise problem
Your tach signal comes off of the coil (assuming remote coil) via a beige wire, with a gray inline connector. If this signal is arcing to anything, the car will run rough. If it is straight grounded, it will shut off and not restart until the ground is gone. As far as the cruise control......that takes a whole separate routing. I dont see the CC being related to the other issues.
