ignition switch change
ignition switch change
I have a 91 camaro RS and I just changed the ignition switch out.The one that was in it had the 2 wires in it and the 1 I put in it didn't.Will not start till I put the old ignition switch to run position and plugged up.Can I just jump these wires together and end up with the same result?Or will it cause me troubles?

Re: ignition switch change
1991 - so you have a VATS system with a VATS key (key has a small 'chip' in it). This 'chip' is a resistor - if the VATS module doesn't get the correct resistance value from the key (eg through the wires), car won't start.
Sounds like you bought the wrong ignition - the new ignition doesn't have the wires, therefore doesn't have the little pickups inside the cylinder, thus can't transmit the correct resistance to the VATS module.
2 options...
1) Return the lock cylinder for the right one. Then take the key blacnk from the new cylinder to ACE Hardware and have them make you keys ($20 ea.) with the same chip resistance as the OLD key from the OLD ignition.
2) Take a volt/ohm meter and measure the resistance of the OLD key, then go to Radio Shack and get a resistor with the same resistance value (get 5 in a pack for $1), locate the two very small orange wires inside the steering column at the bottom of the column, cut them, and install the resistor between the two wire ends on the CAR side, not the steering wheel side.

Re: ignition switch change
Thanks for the info I really appreciate,I checked the wires before reading this post today and the voltage reading was 4.23 ,I did not OHM the key but I will now, thanks again
