please help a desprate 87 GTA owner

Im having an issue with alts i have been through 3 alts in the past three days one of them being a 200 amp power mate. This all started when my fans quit working one day, everything on the fans are pretty much stock except i wired an additional 30 amp silinoid to ground out the secondary fan relay which would engage it. today i installed the power mate started the car and it ran great for about 10 minutes then it quit charging. now i had my fans rewired to go directly from the battery to the hot wire that comes from the fuse able link on the starter i believe this link opened. also i have a problem with the alt getting extremely hot to hot to almost touch also i have three wires that go into the back of my alt from the harness one is brown one is brown with a white stripe and the red. i know where the red is suppose to go but what about the others. I also have a digital gauge cluster i don't know if this matters. I received a new plug with the alt but thought it was optional but the new plug only uses the L and S terminals if i was to use this replacement harness which wires would i hook the L and S terminal to?

It sounds like you turned a simple problem into a complex one.

three wires that go into the back of my alt from the harness one is brown one is brown with a white stripe and the red. i know where the red is suppose to go but what about the others.
The brown goes to the cluster. The brown/wht goes to the C/H Fan fuse under the dash.

I also have a digital gauge cluster i don't know if this matters. I received a new plug with the alt but thought it was optional but the new plug only uses the L and S terminals if i was to use this replacement harness which wires would i hook the L and S terminal to?
On your current plug (which is fine to use), Red = S, Brown = L, and BRN/WHT = F.

The "L" wire needs at least 35 ohms (or more) resistance, or the alternator will eventually fail. A digital dash has an unseen 'generator lamp' (light bulb) in it for resistance.

All wires to the alt should have battery voltage on them with the ignition in 'run' (engine not running).

dead bird thanks man, so between ground and the brown wire i should measure at least 35 ohms, but what throws me is that from the wiring schematics Ive seen it seems like the brown and white wire is also tied into the fan circuit at the main fan relay what is the purpose of this? this wire is tied in together to another brown wire is this a sense wire at the fans that senses the load when the fan comes on. I have also been lead to believe that somehow this is also tied into the air conditioner circuit. i could really use a good explanation of how the charging system on a gta in theory is suppose to work. thanks agian dead bird your information helped alot

come back on and tell us if it worked so others can see what to do if they have the same problem.

i will Ive been fighting voltage problems in this car for about 2 years all the wiring is pretty much stock except for the big three mod and some other tweaks for some reason i want to say that the resistor that tells the alternator to charge on my car may be bad causing being that i don't have a light, i really need to find out where the resistance comes form, for the alternator, all of the diagrams i see through me off one it seems like it uses the ac blower resistor for example.

[QUOTE=jstuart83;4172412]o between ground and the brown wire i should measure at least 35 ohms, [quote]
The manual isn't specific about ohm rating but, from a few retrofit articles (cs130 into an old nova etc) I have seen, it the wire has to have some form of resistance. In the Digital Dash, it just shows a lamp for this. In what I've read, this is sufficient resistance.
Some harnesses had a resistance wire. Delco also makes a resistance wire plug for this purpose if your older car had a gauge, I suppose.
I used a section of resistance wire from the donor truck harness I put in a friends 71 jeep. THough it's all junkyard crap, the alternator still puts out a steady 13.8v.

from the wiring schematics Ive seen it seems like the brown and white wire is also tied into the fan circuit at the main fan relay what is the purpose of this? this wire is tied in together to another brown wire
It is switched ignition power. I'm not sure why it is needed because in a retrofit, just the S and L terminals are used. This is the same way I wired it in the Jeep above.

is this a sense wire at the fans that senses the load when the fan comes on.
The sense wire is the red one ("S" terminal ). I should also note that I screwed up above anf the "F" terminal (harness) is " I " on the alternator. I was looking at the harness side labeling of the diagram.

i could really use a good explanation of how the charging system on a gta in theory is suppose to work.
The CS alternator was used on everything GM. You may be interested in reading though this.... http://www.alternatorparts.com/cs130_sbpage1.htm
