HEI distributor on stock motor????

Does anyone know if there is enough clearance off the firewall to put in a HEI coil cap distributor? I have one from MSD from a few months ago and have never put it in since it really looks next to near impossible to get it in there. I do plan on taking the TBI inake off and replacing it with a carb one so if I can be sure that I'll have the room to install the distributor I'll put everything on. Otherwise I'll have to take this one back and find one that will work for what I want - a one wire setup.

Thanks
Leon

Lots of these cars came with coil-in-cap distributors from the factory.

That's what I thought, but there just doesn't look like much room there.

Next question then...how do I get the thing in there? The firewall shrouds the distributor pretty good. Do I have to lift on the back of the trans to get the motor to lean forward enough to drop it in?? That's really the only thing I can think of...and yes I did check the Haynes manual, it shows the motor already out of the car.

Take the cap off when you put it in, and tilt it forward a little to clear the cowl. There's lots of room.

Ok, I didn't think it would have been that easy with the way it looks. Guess I asked a stupid question. Thanks for the replies, now to find the money to buy a carburetor.
