Hey all, I've poked around some but couldn't really find a direct answer. Sorry if this is has already been gone over.

Anyways my car was originally carbed, I've switched from the mechanical to an electric pump, and I was wondering what's the best way to get power to the electric pump? I'm really green when it comes to wiring. Thanks!

 

The best way to do it would to use a relay where the coil of the relay was powered by a source thats "hot" when the key is in the run and start position. Im not sure exactly how what kind of specifics you need but thats basically how i would do the electrical half of it.

 

What relay would you use and how would you install it? The pump called for a 3-5 amp inline fuse and pushes 4-7 psi. Sorry I've never wired a relay before. Thanks for the reply.

 

Here's a general schematic on how relay's are wired. Once you understand the basic wiring to and from a relay, they're easy to install... Also, they're a lot safer then running hi-amperage electrical components through a switch on the dash.....

 

So from my understanding now... I need to install a relay (probably near the fuse box), run a positive wire from the battery to #30, ground #85 to the frame, find something that is wired to the ignition to run to #86, and run #87 to the pump?

 

Yea that would work. Just don't forget fuses. Put the fuse between the battery and 30 And i would make sure where ever you tap power for the relays coil (pin 86) is fused as well just for safety. If your running power through a factory fuse thats fine just make sure its not something like the radio or accessory fuse lol. It would suck to be stranded because your radio popped a fuse lol. You also want to make sure its a wire thats hot when the key is in the run and in the crank position. Again you could be running around in circles trying to figure out why the car dosnt start only to have it be simple thing like your 12V supply to the relay coil was only hot when the key was in the run position and not while cranking.

 

Someone wouldn't happen to know off the top of their head a good wire to splice into for pin 86? You're right I don't want to be splicing into all kinds of wires just to find one that works while cranking & in the run position.

K so I was reading the instrutions on the Jegs for their fuel pump wiring kit install, and it says that it should be wired to Ignition OR an On/Off switch. Which would be better? I have read on here that an in-cab switch isn't recommended for safety reasons.

 

True.You don't want to "forget" to turn off the "switch" when you get out of your car.Don't want a gas fed fire!!

 

Yea i mean a switch would work but its not really the best. Plus how mych nicer would it be to just turn the key and go? No worries about forgetting it on and killing your battery. Then there's also the safety issues. Lastly i almost forgot to mention be sure to use the right gauge wire. Useing something heavier is ok but too light is bad and can burn out your pump and even cause a fire.

 

Alright I ordered a Jegs wiring kit, complete with circuit breaker. Now I'm just wondering, what's a good wire to splice into for the ignition/cranking position for the relay?

 

Another option is to run an oil pressure swith in the 86/87 circut of the relay. That way the relay can only come on when you car has oil pressure. Then you don't have to worry about your pump running with key on engine off.

 

I think for now I just wanna try running it off of the ignition, but I just don't know what wire to tap in to. Thanks for the suggestion though.

 

On my 84 I tapped into the back of the fuse panel for my ign switched power. I used the ECM fuse since I pulled the computer.

 

Since none of my engine is computer controlled, couldn't I do the same thing? I wouldn't pull the computer out but there's no emissions equipment, that wouldn't mess with the gauges at all would it?

 

If you arent running any of the factory emissions equip there is no reason to leave the computer in.

Tapping into the ECM wire on the back of the fuse panel will not effect your gauges.
