Fuel pump questions

Forgive me if this should have been posted somewhere else. I recently replaced the engine in my car. While the engine was out I replaced the fuel pump. When I got everything back together, the fuel pump would not come on when I turned the switch. I have taken the pump back out to check the wiring harness I installed, and it appears to match the instructions. I also replaced the fuel pump relay, but that did not help. My mechanic told me that I should hear some kind of 'click' from the relay when I turn the switch, but nothing happens when I do, but the motor will turn over.

What suggestions do any of you have for what could be causing the problem? Does anyone have a picture of an assembled fuel sending unit so that I can make sure that I wired mine up correctly? Would any other relays under the hood cause the problem? Thanks for your help. By the way, the car is an '89 Trans Am GTA.

Re: Fuel pump questions

It is possible that the new relay you bought is bad. Wouldnt be the first one I've seen anyway.

Don’t Be Fuelish

It might be difficult to hear the relay *click* from inside the car.

Have a friend turn the key to the RUN position while you listen for the *click*.

You can find out if the fuel pump itself works VIA applying 12 volts to pin E of the pump relay.

Fog lights are not driving lights. They look doofy. Turn em off slow pokes.

How bout those nervous nellies too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime or if there is a little rain!

Pin E is the GREY wire.
