What Electro VSS for my 91 Camaro?
(Sorry if this is in the wrong section, didn't know if this is considered general tech or if it should be in the tranny section)
My car is an automatic 1991 Camaro RS with the 305 TBI motor.
So far my speedo, odo, and gas gauge aren't working. The RPMs also look high when i drive (3500 at 45mph and sometimes red lines to shift gear)
Ive done a lot of searches here, but I still need some help. I took my car to a family friend who works on cars. He didn't check any of the wiring, but he told me he believes the VSS is bad. So he called NAPA, gave them my VIN number, and got 3 different prices for 3 different types of VSS. He told me there were 3 different sensors for my car, but NAPA wasn't sure which one would fit my trans, and that I'd have to bring my car in for them to check. NAPA said the price range for a new VSS is $94 - $177.
How can I determine what VSS I need? I know it has to do with my VIN #, but how so? Is there a link on this site that lists what VSS go with what VIN #s?
I tried looking for speed sensors on part sites, but my searches come up short. If anyone recently bought a VSS for their 91 camaro, could you send me a link to where you ordered it? And what's the lowest price you can get for a VSS? I don't want to sound cheap, but I have to get enough money to also pay for a new fuel sending unit
and the VSS.
Sorry for all the questions, I've only been working on my car for 2 months, but have been learning a ton everyday. Thanks

VSS Mess
Hopefully someone will chime in about which VSS.
However the VSS has nothing to do with the tach.
Your problem is in the circuit inside the dash that moves the pointer.
It’s contained on a small plug-in PCB.
On the PCB you’ll see a resistor chip.
Desolder pins 4 & 10.
Use a 500K potentiometer.
Solder it across traces 4 & 10.
Move the potentiometer to half way.
Start the engine and compare the tach reading with a test equipment quality tach.
Dial it in, unsolder one side of the potentiometer, measure it and buy the matching resistor.

FUEL GAGE:
Make sure it’s getting 12 volts.
If it is test it by disconnecting the sensor line and connect a 47Ω resistor from the point you removed the sensor line, and connect the other end of the resistor to ground.
Turn the key on RUN.
If the gage indicates approximately half full the gage is good.
Therefore the problem should be the sender.

Fog lights are not driving lights. They look doofy. Turn em off slow pokes.
How bout those nervous nellies too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime or if there is a little rain!

Re: VSS Mess
Thanks for the reply Nina, but I'm a little bit confused of the above statement. From what Ive been reading, I thought a broken speedometer would be fixed with a new VSS? I thought the speedometer worked primarily off of the speed sensor?
Is the setup different with an electronic speed sensor?

Yes like I said hopefully someone will chime in about which VSS.
My post addressed the tach.
You stated you believe it reads high.
If it does you can use my above post to fix it.

Re: What Electro VSS for my 91 Camaro?
Great news for all us guys with 1990-1992 Camaros with the 110 speedos who can't find the 145 ones anymore and also a 145mph speedo isn't enough for us LS1 guys anyway. I just talked to Greg the owner of Covans Classic Dash and he is building the guage panel to fit custom Autometer, VDO speedos, tac's etc, etc.. to fit our 1990 to 1992 Camaros, so no more 110 speedo's guys, now we can have 200mph ones in our machines. You can thank me later gentlmen, but for now, call Greg and get your order in. He is going to make them in the factory black matte, brushed aluminum, and of course, Carbon Fiber!!! I'm curious how many of you out there want one, so if you do shoot me an email and just say yes, one for me too, so I can get a grasp on how badly this was needed. Thank you,

Re: What Electro VSS for my 91 Camaro?
Sorry about the confusion Nina, I forgot the tach was for the rpms, haha.
Thanks for the link James, I found that site on google but got confused with the mass amount of text under the 700R4 section, lol. I'll definately give them a call.
As a side note, for some reason my gas gauge is working again. Its been broken for about 5 days, but after filling up yesterday its working again
Thanks for the help
